International Day of the girl child

“A Girl Child Brings Joy, She Is No Less Than A Boy.”

October 11 is the international day of the girl child which is done annually to raise awareness among people about all the inequalities faced by the girl child in the society. If we look around us, there’s so much that the girl child goes through, just for being a girl. In more recent times, I have paid attention to conversations seen how different people reason when some issues are brought up. There is alot the girl child deals with which she shouldn’t have any business dealing with at a young age;

  • Discrimination for Education
  • Child Marriage
  • Gender inequality
  • Rape

“The theme for this year’s International Day of the Girl (11 October) is Girls’ Progress = Goals’ Progress: What Counts for Girls. While we can applaud the ambition and potential of the SDGs for girls, and recognize how girls’ progress is good not only for girls, but also for families, communities and society at large, we must also take this opportunity to consider how existing gaps in data on girls and young women, lack of systematic analysis, and limited use of existing data significantly limit our ability to monitor and communicate the wellbeing and progress of half of humanity” Source

This awareness is to push for investment to be able to gather girl-focused data which would in turn help to get specific needs of girls around the world. This will help girl reach for their dreams and know that they are worth more, they can build better lives for themselves and their communities.

We need better programs, policies in our societies to ensure that the rights of girls are protected and there is no discrimination. Circumstances are different in different parts of the world and I understand that, but even some of our “progressive” countries, our mentality isn’t as progressive and these things are still major problems. We need to move forward, we need to stand up for what is right, we need to stand for girls in our society!

My name is Tomilola and I stand with girls!
